Person of interest named in Thursday shooting

STEUBENVILLE — City Police are searching for a person of interest in connection with the Thursday-morning shooting death of William R. Ross III.

Ross, 24, was found dead in an alley around 4:15 a.m. Thursday along South Seventh Street, across the street from the Market Square Apartments.

Police Chief Bill McCafferty identified Shawn Devron Brookins of Trotwood, a town about 10 miles west of Dayton, as a suspect in the shooting.

Brookins, 34, is also wanted by Wheeling Police for possession with intent to deliver and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. According to media reports, Brookins had fled a traffic stop on Wheeling Island June 28

McCafferty said security tapes the morning of the shooting showed a female exiting the apartment, followed by two males wearing sweatshirts with the hoods pulled up over their heads and then Ross staggering out of the apartment. Another person may have exited the apartment through the back window, the chief had said.

McCafferty said Ross, who wasn’t living at the apartment, had recently been banned from the complex.
