Board members decline coverage plan

NEW CUMBERLAND — Members of the Hancock County Board of Education declined to be placed on the school district’s workers’ compensation plan, as part of actions taken during the board’s meeting Monday.

“It hasn’t been here for the five years that I’ve been on the board,” said Michelle Chappell, the school board president. “Personally, I don’t think it would be county monies I would want to see expended on us.”

The board’s unanimous decision to not be covered will not affect the county’s teachers or staff coverage.

Erie Insurance, the district’s workers’ compensation carrier, contacted the school district to request updated forms. Every few years the district is asked to update their workers compensation forms.

In other actions the board:

¯ Approved the transfers of Amy Marosz from countywide substitute teacher to multi-categorical/Autism instructor at New Manchester Elementary; and Kayla Hinchee from grade six teacher at Weir Middle School to second grade teacher at New Manchester Elementary.

¯ Approved Deborah Dobosz as a countywide substitute teacher; Rose Mary Morris as a countywide substitute teacher; and Frank Carey as the director of personnel at the Central Office.

¯ Approved six extracurricular assignments at Weir High School for the 2019-2020 school year. The assignments include Dee Williams for the Environmental Club; Sarah Alkire as co-sponsor for the Key Club; Gail Creel for the Tri-Hi-Y; Deanna Marsh for the Class of 2023; Gayle Martin co-sponsor for the Class of 2022; and Candice Dotson for Future Business Leaders of America.

¯ Approved four coaching positions, including Ron Smith as the volunteer football assistant at Weir Middle School; Paul Stevens as the volunteer football assistant at Weir Middle School; Timothy Miller as a booster paid football assistant at Weir High School; and Zachary Hartmann as a booster paid football assistant at Weir High School.

¯ Announced letters of interest for the vacant school board seat should be addressed to Chappell and sent to 72 Gibson Road New Cumberland, WV 26047 by Friday. The term for this seat will be until June 30, 2020 and the person filling the vacancy must be from the Grant or Clay districts. The board will be conducting interviews for the vacancy on July 29 at 5 p.m.

¯ The next regular meeting will be 5 p.m., Aug. 12 at the JDRIV Career Center.
