Steubenville police have made an arrest made in Saturday’s shooting incident

STEUBENVILLE — One of three people City Police believe were responsible for firing shots at a man in the 400 block of South Street early Saturday morning was arrested on Tuesday.

Ja’Martay Wise, 22, no fixed address, was charged on Tuesday with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of cocaine.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said he was outside the Spot Bar on South Fourth Street around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday during the Dean Martin festival when he heard several gunshots. Abdalla said he drew his gun and walked to the scene.

Police reported five shell casings were found in the street in the 400 block of South Street. Two vehicles were stuck with bullets, one in the 200 block of South Fourth Street and the other in a lot at South and South Fourth streets, police reported.

While officers were investigating, a resident produced a bullet slug which had struck a second story window of a building.

Police reported Wise and two other men were on foot when the shots were fired.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence at 450 S. Fifth St. shortly after noon on Tuesday.

An officer on patrol saw Wise in a vehicle about 20 minutes later in the 500 block of South Street, pulled the vehicle over and took him into custody. An officer asked Wise if he had anything illegal on him and he pointed to a fanny pack around his waist. The officer reported finding a loaded handgun and cocaine and marijuana inside the fanny pack

Wise was being held without bond at the county jail pending an arraignment today in municipal court.
