River sweep

About 100 volunteers participated Saturday morning in the 30th annual Ohio River Sweep at the Steubenville Marina. The volunteers collected trash and debris along the bank of the river and pulled and cut weeds on the marina wall. The Ohio River Sweep, sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, and coordinated locally by the JB Green Team, is a volunteer, riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond. It is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states and 3,000 miles of shoreline of the Ohio River and its tributaries. Participating in the event were, from left, Duane Montgomery, safety manager at JSW USA; Leo Caprarese, 5, Lucy Caprarese, 7, and their father, Matt Caprarese of Weirton. Caprarese is the environmental director at JSW.
