JVS to upgrade welding labs and bring class into the future

BLOOMINGDALE — The Jefferson County Joint Vocation School voted to upgrade its welding labs and bring the class into the future.

JCJVS welding instructor Todd Parker gave the board a presentation on new robotic welding trainer.

“We have to keep up with the technology that is coming toward us,” he said.

“We are talking about intelligent equipment,” he added.

The cost of two stand-alone machines is $150,396.

“Automation is in our area,” Parker said. “Everything is advancing every day. This will put a manufacturing component in our welding package.”

The board agreed and voted unanimously to approve the purchase.

The welding lab is not the only classroom to get new equipment.

The board also approved the purchases of two trainers for the automotive lab; a dust collector and sander for the auto collision program; and a microscope with a camera for the small animal science classes.

JCJVS principal Dan Hartman announced the school received a grant that will allow poles to be placed along the glass front of the building that would stop anyone from driving into the building.

Hartman said it will look similar to what you see in front of grocery stores. The poles will be put in place during the summer.

Hartman announced the all the schools programs, including an HVAC program to begin in the fall, have been approved for another year.

The board approved several field trips for the students still competing after the state competitions in their fields.

Two students in the HOSA — Future Health Professionals group will be going to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the national conference.

Also, seven students will be traveling to Louisville to compete in the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference and two students will be traveling to Anaheim, Calif., for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America competition.

Board members accepted monetary donations in the following amounts: Wal-Mart Foundation, $1,000; JB Green Team, $176.73; and KOREnergy, $1,000.

Board members accepted the donation of a 2000 Saturn SL2 to be used in the automotive service technician program from Jeanette Hauber.
