Friday escapee from EOCC captured in Jewett

STEUBENVILLE — Harrison County sheriff’s deputies chased a naked man down West Main Street in Jewett after he escaped Friday evening from the Eastern Ohio Correction Center outside of Wintersville.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reported being notified by officials at the correction center that Richard C. Graham, 43, of Jewett had escaped. The correction center reported Graham wasn’t in his room during a head count at midnight Friday. Graham was seen on security tapes climbing the fence in the recreation yard on Friday evening, and going on to a roof.

He was last seen running toward the county water tank off state Route 43.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department was notified and deputies went to the residence of Graham’s girlfriend around 2 a.m. on Saturday. A deputy there said the girlfriend let the deputies into the house. Graham was found naked hiding in a bedroom closet, a deputy said.

Deputies hit Graham a couple times with a Taser but he managed to get out of the house and run naked down West Main Street in Jewett.

A deputy deployed a Taser again, and another deputy was able to take Graham to the ground and place him under arrest.

A Harrison County sheriff’s deputy said they took Graham back to the girlfriend’s residence and found methamphetamine in the bedroom he was hiding in.

The deputy noted the methamphetamine could explain Graham’s resistance to the Taser.

Graham was taken to an area hospital to have six Taser prongs removed.

He had been sentenced in Harrison County Common Pleas Court on March 18 to six months in the EOCC on a felony domestic violence charge.
