Sentences handed down in Jefferson County court

STEUBENVILLE — William C. Chamberlain, 39, of 136 S. Seventh St. was found guilty on Thursday evening by a Jefferson County Common Pleas Court jury of assault on an officer and resisting arrest after a one-day trial before Judge Michelle Miller.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol pulled over Chamberlain’s vehicle on Oct. 14 on state Route 7, near Brilliant. Chamberlain twice wrestled with the trooper before escaping into a wooded area. Chamberlain, who was sprayed in the face with mace during the incident and lost his shoes, was apprehended a short distance away, the patrol reported.

The jury deliberated about one hour before returning with the guilty verdict.

Chamberlain faces up to 18 months in prison. Miller set sentencing for 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Roman B. Longo, 33, of Steubenville was sentenced by Miller on Friday to 100 days in the county jail and six months in the Eastern Ohio Correction Center after Longo pleaded guilty to felony theft.

Longo is charged with cutting a chain on a generator on the emergency command vehicle of the Brooke County Emergency Management Agency while it was parked in the 600 block of South Street awaiting repair work on Nov. 26. Longo tried to pawn it in West Virginia. County Assistant Prosecutor Stephen Lamatrice said the generator was recovered.

Bob Fowler, Brooke County EMA director, said other items were taken and never recovered.

Longo will be on probation for three years. He faces 12 months in prison if he violates probation.

Lamatrice said Longo has a history of theft and breaking and entering convictions.

Miller told Long he has a history of not following the rules based on his criminal history.

Longo claimed he is addicted to drugs and was doing whatever he could to get money.

Thomas J. Chaney, 48, of 143 Spruce Lane, Mingo Junction, pleaded guilty to a felony theft account on Friday.

Lamatrice said Chaney was working for a company which owns rental property in Steubenville. Chaney had access to a company credit card and made illegal purchases totaling $13,088 between October and January, Lamatrice said.

Miller sentenced Chaney to five years of probation and ordered him to make $13,088 in restitution. She ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service. Chaney faces 18 months in prison if he violates probation.
