BLOOMINGDALE — The Jefferson County Joint Vocational School held its reorganzational meeting and regular meeting at the Crestview Inn Tuesday. The location was chosen to celebrate School Board Recognition Month. The board members were provided a meal prepared by the culinary arts students at the JVS.

Following the meal, Superintendent Todd Phillipson presented board members with JVS sweatshirts and framed certificates from the Ohio School Board Association.

“It’s a pleasure to have worked with this board,” he said. “The wealth of knowledge and expertise is what makes these schools successful. They show a real interest in the students, and that’s what education is all about.”

The board re-elected Larry George as president and Steve Bezak as vice-president. George, Barbara Cunningham and Randy Henry also were re-appointed to the panel for 2019.

JCJVS Principal Dan Hartman updated the board on the upcoming Spotlight on Skills competition Jan. 24. During the competition, students will compete in academics and lab programs throughout the day hoping to earn a spot in the regional competitions. The events will be judged by members of the local business community.

“The teachers are working very hard getting ready for our students to compete,” Hartman said. “We are going to make sure every student has every opportunity.”

Phillipson shared an e-mail from a former student, Chris Flohr, with the board. In the e-mail, Flohr thanked the school for the skills and lessons he learned there.

The board also voted to have Brenda Clifton replace Carole Castner in the cake decorating class. They also voted to add Eric Nutter as teacher of basic electricity and Travis Stoica as the home handyperson teacher for the winter term.

The board approved a memorandum of understanding with Kent State for the college credit plus program.

Phillipson said that February is technical education month.
