STEUBENVILLE — Gross sales in Jefferson County increased by 7 percent percent in September compared to the same period last year.

Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said gross sales for September totaled $79.05 million, generating $1,185,781 in piggyback sales tax revenue for the county. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for September 2017 generated $1,106,923 based on gross sales of $73.79 million.

Retail sales have averaged $68.04 million a month this year, compared to a monthly average of $72.78 million in 2017. September’s sales tax was the highest reported this year.

Speaker set for

safety council meeting

STEUBENVILLE — Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Greg Mamula will be the guest presenter at the next Jefferson County Safety Council meeting set for Wednesday in Founders Hall at Eastern Gateway Community College.

Mamula, a Steubenville Big Red alumnus and a 1997 graduate of the OHP Training Academy, will discuss cold weather safety and winter operator safety.

Lunch will begin at 11:30, with the program set for noon.
