Two are charged in theft in Kroger parking lot
STEUBENVILLE — City Police arrested a husband and wife on Tuesday after the woman allegedly reached into an occupied van in the Kroger parking lot and stole items.
A couple went shopping in the early afternoon on Tuesday and their 11-year-old son wanted to stay in the van, police reported. The son said a woman opened the van door, reached inside and took a cell phone, iPad and wallet, police reported. The son was able to give a detailed description of the woman, adding the woman and a man got on a city bus. Officers, with the help of a bus driver, said they were able to locate the woman, identified as Stephanie N. McGee, 29, of 960 Sherman Ave., who initially denied involvement in the theft. She then pulled the cell phone out of her waistband, police reported. She told officers the wallet was hidden under a car in a city parking lot, and officers were able to locate the wallet.
McGee said her husband, William McGee, 32, had the iPad. Police located him in the 900 block of North Fifth Street and were able to recover the iPad.
The stolen items then were returned to the owners, according to officials.
Stephanie McGee was charged with felony theft, and her husband was charged with receiving stolen property.
