Delores Wiggins, president of the Steubenville Civil Service Commission, observed Steubenville Police Department officers prepare for promotional exams Wednesday morning in the Pugliese conference room in the Municipal Building. The commission is testing eligible police sergeants for a captain’s position that will open with the upcoming retirement of Capt. John Young, while patrolmen will test to fill the opening that will come with the promotion to captain of a sergeant. The Civil Service Commission will test to establish an eligibility list for new patrolmen and dispatchers on June 23 at Eastern Gateway Community College. Exams for a new captain in the Steubenville Fire Department and for a new firefighter eligibility list will be given Saturday at EGCC. The new captain will fill the vacancy created with the promotion of Christopher Takach to assistant chief when Michael Taylor retired earlier this year. Despite worries in May that there were few applicants for the entry-level positions in both departments, a late surge swelled the ranks of potential test takers.
