Steubenville police

Brawling women: Five women, two of them juveniles, are facing charges after an alleged street fight on Hill Avenue at South Street, Friday. The three adult women charged were Ojania Alexander, 19, 389 Terri Ave., Steubenville, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer; Tajhonda Birden, 29, 313 Hill Ave., Steubenville, disorderly conduct and obstructing official business; and Nicole Alexander, 37, also of Terri Ave., failure to appear. The first officer to arrive at the scene said he found a “large group” of 10-15 people involved in the disturbance, including “what appeared to be two young women actively striking one another while pushing each other up against a nearby chain link fence.” The officer said he was trying to separate the two of them when a juvenile female grabbed his hands and “was attempting to stop (him)” from handcuffing Ojania Alexander. He said as he continued to try to handcuff the 19-year-old without hurting her, he spotted another female on the ground “being beaten by a large group of individuals” and left her to aid the other woman, later identified as Ojania’s mother, Nicole Alexander. The officer said once his attention was diverted from her, Ojania Alexander locked herself in a car and refused to exit, and actively resisted their efforts to get her out of the car when the driver eventually unlocked it for them. Police said she made it clear she didn’t want to get into the cruiser and kicked a detective in the arm when he tried to get her feet inside the vehicle. The juveniles were taken to the detention center, police said.

Bad behavior: Employees at a downtown eatery needed police to remove a man causing a disturbance, Friday. Police said when they arrived the man “immediately became upset, yelling and cursing” and began arguing with him when he was told he needed to leave the premises. After identifying him he was informed he cannot return to the restaurant.

Parked: Two people, one of them a juvenile, on Seventh and Adams streets were told they can’t ride minibikes in the street, Friday. They said they were parking them.

On the lookout: Two women were seen throwing rocks at and breaking windows in a building in the 400 block of Washington Street, Wednesday. The building’s owner had pictures of the women, who police were unable to immediately locate.

Attracting attention: A New Cumberland resident who was allegedly harassing customers at Wal-Mart was taken into custody after police were told he had an outstanding warrant, Wednesday. Police said they located Bruce Kohlepp, 27, 704 New Cumberland Ave., inside the store and served the arrest warrant for failure to appear.

Multiple charges: A city resident is facing multiple charges after police allegedly spotted stolen plates on a Kia Sorento she was seen driving, Wednesday. Police said they’re charging Kaija A. Tiihonen, 27, 1207 Oak Grove Ave., Steubenville, with receiving stolen property, possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. They said she initially denied being in the vehicle, but eventually requested they let her retrieve her cell phone but when she opened the door police spotted a plastic bag with a white residue and then found several pieces of a rock-like substance, all believed to be crack cocaine, as well as three glass pipes. Police seized the license plate and towed the vehicle.

Wrong turn: A motorist allegedly seen making an illegal left turn from Bryden Road onto Sunset Boulevard ended up with a citation for another violation, police said. Adam J. Freshwater, 28, 414 Lovers Lane, was cited for having expired plates and warned for the turn violation. Left turns from Bryden onto Sunset are prohibited from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., police said.

Code violation: Notice of violation was sent to the owner/occupant of properties at 403 Belleview Blvd., an old bathtub and other items scattered in back the yard, as well as a vehicle with flat tires and expired plates.

Quiet: A resident in the 700 block of Oakmont Avenue was warned to turn the volume down on his radio, Tuesday. Callers had complained he was playing it too loudly.

Code issues: Officers looked into complaints that a couch and other junk were being stored in a driveway at 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. Police said there was a trailer loaded with junk, a sofa and old bags of concrete in the driveway that the owner advised a tenant who moved out before Christmas and had left behind.

Play danger: Juveniles were seen entering an abandoned building on Ash Street, Tuesday. Police located several children who admitted they’d been inside it, and explained to them the danger of playing in abandoned and dilapidated properties, then sent them on their way. No children were inside the building when police did a walk-through.
