Driving hazard: A Hammondsville woman said a man who “seemed to be highly intoxicated” and driving a red Ford F-350 “tore up (several) yards” in Irondale, Thursday. They said he began “driving around erratically” after they confronted him and then had gotten out of a vehicle behind someone’s residence and was “yelling at everybody.” The caller said she’d had some friends and family over for the evening when they saw the man driving up and down the street, at one point stopping so abruptly a dog in the bed of the truck fell out and onto its back on the pavement. They said they ran over to help the dog, but it ran off, though the driver “became aggressive” toward her and her friends. She said someone shot a video showing the driver trying to goad one of her friends into a fight. A deputy located the truck and said the driver smelled of alcohol and admitted he’d been drinking since that afternoon, but he had already gotten out of the vehicle. He initially denied driving, then later told them “A group of people tried to fight him, and he drove back home and parked his truck.” He refused to agree to a field sobriety test. He was not charged, though he was warned not to leave his home.

She said the man and two others eventually came to her door asking for money. Officers were able to make contact with the neighbor, who is familiar with the male “and often gives him money for food, etc.” but admitted it was “worrisome” he’d climbed over the fence. Police said the woman called them herself on Thursday, saying he’d returned and asked her for money. She told police her husband used to give the man food and money from time to time, but he has since passed away and the man continues to come to her home at odd hours of the night, sometimes bringing strangers with him.
