Toronto seniors give to food/toy drives
TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met Nov. 14 with President Barbara Pritts welcoming Tammy Allen as the group’s newest member.
Co-Chaplain Gloria Boley gave the blessing prior to the Thanksgiving feast, which included turkey and an array of side dishes and desserts.
Following the meal, those in attendance thanked the November kitchen committee, consisting of Tracey Wade, Diana Hooper and several volunteers.
Members recited the pledge, after which Secretary Karen Martin conducted the roll call of officers.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read, followed by Treasurer Lynn Miller giving the financial report.
Social Secretary MaryAnn Landerfield announced those who will be serving on the December kitchen committee, including Nancy Bodrog, Phyllis Smith, Louie Nelson and Joyce Gribben.
Landerfield updated the group on various free social activities and encouraged their participation.
One person was remembered under the health report. Vice President Sandi Radvansky reminded attendees the bus will leave the parking lot of Clarke Hinkle Stadium at noon today for the trip to Wheeling.
Those taking the tour will venture to either the Ohio Valley Mall for shopping or go to Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack for a few hours.
Dinner will be held at the Olive Garden in the Highlands, after which the bus will tour the Oglebay Festival of Lights.
Pritts announced the food items collected by the group were delivered to the Helping Hands Food Pantry Nov. 8. Toys collected by members had been taken to the Crossroads Church for distribution through the Toys for Toronto program.
Diana Hooper was recognized as member of the month. She cited technology as the thing that had changed the most during her lifetime.
“Everything is smart … smart cars, smart phones. Everything but me is smart.” She was presented with a gift certificate to a local grocery store.
The activity for the evening was designed to see who was the most aware of their surroundings, while keeping with the theme of Thanksgiving.
A large colorful turkey flag was displayed throughout the meeting, yet, few were able to recall its details once it was removed.
Questions were asked, with Louie Nelson being awarded the prize for recalling the most correct identifying traits.
The moral of this activity was be more aware of your surroundings.
Don Pritts sold tickets for the 50/50 drawing, which was won by Lucy Timko, Mary Murphy and Tom Deptula.
Following brag time and a short Thanksgiving poem, the meeting was adjourned.
Members played several rounds of bingo, with Joe Radvansky calling the numbers.
Bingo winners included: Frank Marino, Dave Devore, Ethel Stevens, Ken Emery, Landerfield, Lori Gorney, Pritts, Bodrog, Mary Lou Emery, Bea Lytlee, Estrella Hess and Timko.
The next meeting will be Dec. 12 for the group’s Christmas dinner banquet. Reservations are required for the event.
