Indian Creek to hold circus-themed Literacy Night
MINGO JUNCTION — Hills Elementary School is inviting students and their families to an evening under the big top, as this year’s Literacy Night will feature a circus theme Wednesday.
The free event will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and feature carnival-type foods and learning stations.
A.J. Renner, a third-grade teacher and co-organizer of the event, stated more than 100 people are expected to attend, noting there will be plenty to do and all of the activities and food are free.
“We have corn dogs and lemonade for everyone that attends and our PTO is selling candy bars for $1 and popcorn for 50 cents,” Renner said. “At this time, 136 people have RSVP’d and we are anticipating 150 or more.”
Renner, along with fellow teachers and committee members Holly McClain and Beth Newburn, are planning the festivities. Renner said the circus-type event marries education with family interaction. She explained the purpose of literacy events is to engage students through hands-on-learning activities, while fostering parental involvement in a relaxed learning environment.
“It is a family night focused on connecting literacy with subject areas from pre-K to sixth grade,” Renner stated. “Our goal is to engage families and help students recognize that literacy is integral to all we do. This year, we are hosting a dedicated information station for parents and guardians. During this time, parents will learn how to stay connected through essential communication platforms, including Facebook, Nutrition Slice, ParentSquare, Clever and Progress Book. All of these are vital for effective communication throughout the school year.”
