Richmond church to host VBS

RICHMOND — Richmond Methodist Church, located at 112 S. Sugar St. in Richmond, will host its annual Vacation Bible School from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 14-18.

The event is open to all children ages 4 through students who will be entering the eighth grade this fall. The theme of this year’s VBS will be “Road Trip — On the Go With God.”

The outreach will include a meal, music, crafts and other activities.

Book club to meet

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library Book Club will meet in-person and virtually at 5 p.m. June 26 to discuss David Baldacci’s “Simply Lies.”

Participants will receive the book they will be discussing next month.

Crochet club to meet

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will hold its Crochet Club at noon on June 18.

The group is for adults only. Beginners through experts are welcome to attend.

Participants should bring their own supplies and projects to work on. Someone will be available to offer assistance or instruction, if needed.

Special play offered for preschoolers

WELLSBURG — Parents and guardians of children 6 and younger are invited to visit the Brooke County Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday.

Guests will have the opportunity to use the library’s toys and games that are designed to promote hand-eye coordination, as well as a basic understanding of science, engineering, art and math concepts.

Parents are encouraged to assist the children with the toys. Volunteers will set up and take down the toys, officials noted.

Libraries to close for holidays

The Brooke County Public Library in Wellsburg and the Follansbee Library will be closed June 19-20 in recognition of the state holidays Juneteenth and West Virginia Day.

The library in Wellsburg will reopen June 21 during its usual Saturday hours.

Watercolor weaving offered

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will hold a watercolor weaving workshop for those 16 and older, including adults, at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Carl Tribbett will show participants how to weave two separate watercolor samples into one finished work. All supplies will be provided.

Reservations for the free program should be made by calling (304) 737-1551.

The workshop is in keeping with the summer reading program’s theme, Color Our World.

Readers of all ages are invited to log their books online or through a paper form that is available at the library.

Logged books will offer the chance to win various prizes, officials said.

Camera club announces winners

WINTERSVILLE — The Upper Ohio Valley Camera Club announced its top finishers during competition held in May.

In the theme category of Urban, the top finishers included, Lisa Carte, first place; Karen Felix, second place; and Sharon Slokan, third place.

The open category winners were: Dennis Jones, first place; Michelle Stevens, second place; and John Hanish, third place.

In the special effects category, the top finishers were: Slokan, first place; Sue Adey, second place; and Michelle Stevens, third place.

The club welcomes anyone who has an interest in photography, whether it is using a camera or a cell phone to take photos. All are welcome to attend a meeting.

The club’s next scheduled meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Two Ridges Presbyterian Church, located at 1085 Canton Road in Wintersville. The group meets on the lower level in the social hall.

Banner and Buckles meet

SMITHFIELD — The Banner and Buckles 4-H Club met June 5 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

According to a club meeting report written by Nolan Powell Scarpone, a member of the Banners and Buckles Club, the group discussed 4-H camp details and “got out their gloves to work hard to prepare their flower garden.”

Scarpone noted in his report the club has been “working diligently on their books,” adding that officials will be judging the children’s projects on July 12. The club’s next meeting will take place at 5 p.m. July 6 at the fairgrounds.

Railroaders to hold meeting

CHESTER — All railroaders are invited to a breakfast meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. June 19 at the Family Kitchen and Smokehouse restaurant in Chester.
