STEUBENVILLE — It isn’t often today’s younger generation takes an interest in their hometown’s past.

But all that is about to change.

The Sycamore Youth Center will offer a unique opportunity for local youth to explore the rich architectural heritage of the city through a Historic Homes and Architecture Camp.

The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 2-6 for those between the ages of 6 and 12. Children will delve into the world of architectural design and history through a hands-on experience that combines education with creativity.

Led by Sarah Wear, a professor at Franciscan University of Steubenville, participants will embark on guided walking tours of Steubenville’s historic Fourth Street. They will have the opportunity to examine the distinctive features of Victorian, art deco and Romanesque revival architecture.

“Our goal is to ignite a passion for architecture and local history in young learners,” Wear stated. “By exploring the buildings that line our streets, students can connect with the past and appreciate the craftsmanship that defines our city’s character.”

Not only will the children go on tours, but campers will engage in model-building activities, constructing their own interpretations of the architectural styles studied. This creative process aims to reinforce their understanding of design principles and historical context, according to Wear.

Bobbyjon Bauman, the Sycamore center’s executive director, emphasized the camp’s role in community engagement.

“This program not only educates, but also fosters a sense of pride in our local heritage,” Bauman said. “It’s about connecting the younger generation with the stories embedded in our city’s architecture.”

The Historic Homes and Architecture Camp is part of Sycamore’s summer offerings, which include 18 free camps covering various interests.

Spaces are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parents interested in enrolling their children can find information and sign-up details at sycamorecenter.com/summer-camp-sign-ups.

Questions can be addressed to the center by calling (740) 409-2986.
