IACC’s 100 years to honor members

WINTERSVILLE — The Italian American Cultural Club will celebrate the organization’s 100th anniversary with a special event planned for May 18 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.

Founded in 1925 as the Steubenville Dramatic Club, in which members performed a variety of Italian operas, the organization has evolved throughout the years. During the 40’s, the club merged with the Columbus club, becoming the Columbus Dramatic Club, according to officials.

In 1952, the organization became independent once again. Members re-organized and created the official title … the Italian American Cultural Club.

“The IACC has always been dedicated to promote, preserve and protect the Italian heritage,” members stated.

During the club’s early years, operas such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “La Forza del Destino” and “Otello,” were performed. These performances were such great successes, club members donated the proceeds to various organizations, including St. Anthony Church and the Italian Red Cross.

Carapellotti

For several years, opera was the highlight of all of the club’s events.

The group was responsible for bringing many Italian dignitaries and musical performers to the Steubenville area.

The club has promoted the Italian culture through a variety of public events since its inception, including the Una Serata Italiano, Festa del vino and the annual Campo Italiano — a summer camp for children held at the local Italian village.

This year’s 100th anniversary will focus on remembering the club’s members who have died, officials announced. The former members will be honored posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Individuals who will be honored include the Rev. Edmundo Stabene, Rick Pastre and Dr. John Metcalf.

Laman

Two current members will be the recipient of a special award, with Carmella Gentile to be honored for the founding of Campo Italiano, and Mary Ann Patrizio, for being the longest active living member of the club.

The anniversary celebration will feature a new addition to the club, organizers commented.

Five local Italian Americans were recently selected to be inducted into the newly-named Italian American Honor Guild. These area residents will be recognized for their contributions to the community during the event, where one of the five will be elected as this year’s Spirit of Italia Award winner. Honorees include Francesca Carinci, Rita Carapellotti, Ed Laman, Domenick Mucci and Reno Saccoccia.

The celebration will consist of dinner, award presentations and entertainment by children from the Campo Italiano. The Cavaliers band will perform during the evening as well.

Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased by visiting iaccsteubenville.org and clicking the 100 Year Anniversary link. No tickets will be sold at the door.
