Memorial Day open house planned

AVELLA — The A.D. White Research Society will hold its Memorial Day Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the former Wabash Railroad Station, located at 10 Seneca Place in Avella.

Featuring coffee, tea and history, the society will have displays which honor local service members who died while serving in the line of duty.

Beverages and snacks will be provided. Those attending will have the opportunity to tour the Avella train station, a structure that is more than 100 years old and home to the research society.

CEOS to hold class June 5

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service will hold the first of its Garden to Pantry Food Preservation classes from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 5 at 4-H Camp Aura, located at 147 Camp Aura Lane in New Cumberland.

Hosted by the Newview CEOS club, the first lesson will focus on how to make jams and jellies. The class will teach how to preserve the jams through water bath canning.

Officials explained participants will make jam, prepare jars and process the containers using the water bath method of canning. Each participant can take home their jar. The cost will be $15 and must be received no later than one week prior to the class. Checks should be made out to Newview CEOS Club, and mailed to Treasurer Becky Wiegers, 59 Aberdeen Road, Chester, WV 26034.

Two additional classes will follow. A water bath and pressure canning course will be held June 19 and a freezing and dehydrating class is set for July 10.

All classes will be held at Camp Aura and cost $15.

Anyone taking all three classes will have $10 taken off the total cost, officials said.

Finley Church to hold VBS

STEUBENVILLE — Finley Church, located on Lincoln Avenue in Steubenville, will hold its True North Vacation Bible School for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 1-5. Organizers stated children will have the opportunity to “discover what it means to trust Jesus in a wild world.”

There will be Bible-learning activities, the singing of songs, playing teamwork-building games, making and eating treats, experiencing “one-of-a-kind Bible adventures,” collecting Bible memory buddies to remind each participant of Jesus’s love, testing fun science experiments and making memories one will never forget.

Church holds Mother’s Day service

BRILLIANT — The House of Prayer Church, located on Riddles Run Road near Brilliant, held a special Mother’s Day service May 11.

Potted flowers were given to every mother in attendance. Special flowers were distributed to the following mothers: Dotty Mayle, oldest mother; Cloa Spring, youngest mother; and Margie Bensie, Mother of the Year.
