Church to perform ‘Hosanna’

WEIRTON — “Hosanna, the Rock Opera!” has been a fixture in the Weirton and Steubenville communities since the 1990s. It began as a small-scale Easter performance inside Weirton’s St. Paul Church.

Throughout the decade, it continued to grow into a major production involving many denominations and a large, diverse cast and crew. Audiences grew from a few hundred people to thousands of loyal guests wanting to be nurtured through its message. A message of community, belonging and of the greatest event in the history of the world — Jesus Christ sacrificing his life, so we may be saved and live with him in eternity, officials explained.

In 2019, “Hosanna, the Rock Opera!” was put on the heart of Carrie Shultz to “resurrect” the musical. Patrick LeMasters is the executive producer and music director, Sheila Cavalette, director and producer and Carrie Oliver-Shultz, children’s music director. All stated they are excited to bring the musical production back to Weirton.

Shultz, along with Rick Witkowski, owner of Studio L, revised the music David Bordas wrote years ago — giving it a modern sound for today’s attendees. However, with less than two weeks to go before its opening in March of 2020, the show was canceled due to COVID-19. Each Lent since, the production was brought to life on a smaller scale. This year, the session of Cove Presbyterian Church in Weirton has agreed to open their doors to host rock opera.

“We are so thankful to the many businesses, friends and family who helped make this production possible,” officials commented. “We’re extremely grateful to our performers, all of whom live here in the Ohio Valley and have worked tirelessly to bring ‘Hosanna’ to life.”

This year’s cast includes Patrick LeMasters of Steubenville, playing the role of Jesus Christ; Kevin Nelles of Mingo Junction as Caiaphas, the High Priest; Ben Safranski of Steubenville as Judas Iscariot; Lindsey King of Wheeling as Mary Magdalene; Carrie Oliver-Shultz of Weirton as Mary of Bethany; Casey Stone of Steubenville as Martha of Bethany; and David Prosen of Steubenville as the Apostle Peter. The community is invited to attend any of the upcoming performances. Show dates will be at 7 p.m. April 4-6 and April 11-13. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with open seating. The event is free to attend.

Cove Presbyterian Church, located at 3404 Main St. in Weirton, is requesting guests bring non-perishable items for the church’s food pantry. Parking is available in the Weirton Millsop Community Center and Municipal Building parking lot. Wheelchair accessibility is available on the Main Street side of the building. Questions can be e-mailed to hosannaresurrection@gmail.com. A free-will offering will be accepted at each performance to help defray costs, as well as to provide future productions of the musical.
