Brooke’s Stevens named Bonner Scholar at Waynesburg

FOLLANSBEE — Curtis “Triston” Stevens, a Brooke High School senior, has been named the recipient of the Bonner Scholarship at Waynesburg University. He will be part of the Bonner Scholar program, where the focus is on community service and leadership.

To qualify, incoming freshmen must complete the scholarship application and interview process, maintain a 3.0 cumulative high school grade-point average and place in the top 40 percent of their graduating high school class. Scholars must complete 140 hours of unpaid community service, training and enrichment for a nonprofit organization every semester, as well as complete two summers of 280 hours of community service each summer with a nonprofit organization.

Stevens was selected due to his “solid academic performance and demonstration of service to his community,” according to officials. His service began with his organizing flood cleanup efforts with the football team and coaching the Bantam Little Bruins. He plans to continue volunteering with the team each summer before leaving for college and while at home.

Stevens is a two-year Bruin leader, member of the OVAC Leadership Board, a Future Leaders program member, football team captain, West Virginia mat academic all state, OVAC honorable mention in football and named to the Bruins Best.

He attended two summers at the West Virginia National Guard Youth Leaders Camp, where he was presented the most physically fit and the Spirit Leadership award. This year, he is the recipient of the West Virginia Army National Guard Leadership Award, was named impact player of the week and recipient of the Paul “Bud” Billiard Award.

He will join a group of 60 students at Waynesburg in the fall, who are committed to making a difference in their local, regional and global communities.
