STEUBENVILLE — The sound of cheering filled the air as Cub Scouts from Pack 3 gathered for their annual Pinewood Derby Jan. 27 at Grace Lutheran Church in Steubenville.

Families and friends of the participants watched in excitement as the Scouts raced their handmade wooden cars down the sleek, gravity-powered track.

The Pinewood Derby, a long-standing tradition in Scouting, encourages creativity, craftsmanship and sportsmanship. This year’s event featured a variety of uniquely-designed cars — from sleek speedsters to imaginative themed creations.

Each Scout put their skills to the test, carefully crafting and fine-tuning their vehicles in hopes of taking home the top prize.

“This is one of the most iconic traditions of Cub Scouting,” said Cubmaster Michael Graul. “The kids put so much effort into their cars, and it’s amazing to see their excitement as they race.”

After several thrilling heats, winners were announced in categories such as fastest car, best design and best sportsmanship. Regardless of the results, all participants left with smiles, awards and the pride of a job well done, Graul stated.

Participant George Orisini stated, “I had the most fun competing with my friends. We always have fun together. He added he always has fun in scouting and especially enjoyed learning about knife safety. Parents and volunteers praised the event as a great way to bring the community together while teaching the Scouts valuable lessons in teamwork, perseverance and friendly competition.

With another successful Pinewood Derby in the books, Pack 3 is already looking forward to next year’s race, where new designs, new challenges and new memories await.
