Vocal ensemble to perform

STEUBENVILLE — The male vocal ensemble Floriani will perform a sacred music concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, located at 425 N. Fourth St. The event is being co-sponsored by St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Sacred Music Department and Fine Arts Society.

Floriani is a world-class men’s ensemble “dedicated to serving the Catholic Church and saving the culture through the beauty of sacred music,” officials stated. The concert “In Paradisum: O Death, Where Is Thy Sting?” draws inspiration from a Requiem Mass traditionally offered for the deceased.

The performance will feature traditional chanted pieces from the liturgy, such as “Requiem in Aeternum” and “Pie Jesu,” as well as devotional pieces, including “Wayfaring Stranger,” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” The concert is free, with free-will donations accepted.

Floriani member Thomas Quackenbush joined the ranks of Franciscan University’s sacred music faculty. During the spring semester, a new course on chant will be available for students to learn more about this ancient form of music.

Edison High Drama Club to perform

RICHMOND — The Edison High School Drama Club will take to the stage for a fall production featuring five one-act plays. Students will perform a series of short comedies by playwright David Ives entitled, “Plays of Our (L)Ives,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 22-23 in the school auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. The cost will be $8 for adults and $5 for students or seniors. Seniors who possess an Edison pass will be admitted free of charge. Club adviser David Schultz is the director. Plays include “Sure Thing,” “Words, Words, Words,” “Time Flies,” Arabian Nights,” and “Variations on the Death of Trotsky.”

“The play is five short, one-acts comedic in nature, relying heavily on the playwright’s fun sense of word play,” Schultz said. “Plots include the first date of a pair of mayflies, three chimpanzees attempting to write Shakespeare, a guy trying and failing repeatedly to ask a girl on a date, a translator accidentally fostering love between a shopkeeper and customer and various re-tellings of the death of Russian revolutionist, Leon Trotsky.”

The cast includes 30 students. Seniors in the production include Jordan Hughes, president, and Zachary Kuntz in “Sure Thing.” Avah Reed, vice president, along with Kyle Martin and Brennan Carson, will perform in “Variations on the Death of Trotsky.” Cheyenne Jorda, Kathryn Clancey and Madison Grim perform in “Words Words Words.” Jamie Barker, treasurer, and Madison Somerville will perform in “Time Flies.”

Ramos also serves as sound director.
