Celebrating Unity Day
Unity Day took place on Oct. 16, with Steubenville City Schools marking the event in a variety of ways. At top left, Harding Middle School students wore the color orange and distributed bracelets to those at the school, while seventh-grade students hung homemade magnets on lockers. Among those taking part in the activities were, from left, Maria Buffo, Alaina Ford and Khloe Tolley. At top right, Pugliese West Elementary School focused on the topic of unity by having the school’s club, the Bully Busters, lead the charge against bullying. Coached by fourth-grade teacher Jared Robinson, participants continued to encourage kindness and promoted anti-bullying throughout Unity Day. Those representing the club included, from left, front, Walter Moore and Kalihi Aiko-Yaw; and back, Emma Smallwood, Robinson and Keontae Weaver. Below, teachers, staff and pupils at East Garfield Elementary School created a banner to recognize the special day. Each student at the school incorporated their handprint onto the banner, pledging to stand together. Each person was taught the importance of being able to “Take my hand as we journey together,” as the sign implies.
