4-H clubs seeking members
WELLSBURG — The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service is inviting children between the ages of 5 and 8 to join its 4-H Cloverbud chapters.
The first meeting of the Buffalo Clovers will be held at 6 p.m. today in Brooke Hills Park’s Bald Eagle Shelter.
The first meeting of the Clever Clovers will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Follansbee Community House. Chapters are available for older youths, as well.
Officials stated males and females can participate in a variety of activities through the chapters, including a summer camp at Oglebay Park and teen leadership conferences at Jackson’s Mill Conference Center. For information, call (304) 737-3666.
Legion post to hold trunk-or-treat
WEIRTON — The Weirton American Legion Post 10 will hold a trunk-or-treat event for all area children from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the post, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave. in Weirton.
Officials will be handing out treats of all kinds, with cookies and drinks to be served in the bingo hall. Pictures also will be available for children to color.
Community Halloween party set
WELLSBURG — The City of Wellsburg will hold its community Halloween party from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday on the Town Square.
A free hot dog and treat bag will be distributed to each of the first 100 children in attendance. There will be a drawing to win a bicycle that has been donated by the Wellsburg Kiwanis Club.
The party is being coordinated by Mary Ann Habbit, city collector and treasurer, with the help of the Wellsburg Lions Club and donations from many local businesses.
Church women to meet at Shiloh
WEIRTON — The Weirton unit of Church Women United will celebrate World Community Day at 11 a.m. Nov. 1. Hosting the event will be Shiloh Apostolic Church, located at 3000 Weir Ave. in Weirton.
Lisa Indermuhle and Heather Latt from the YWCA Wheeling STEP program will be in attendance.
Members of the church women are asked to bring snack items for the Weirton Christian Center’s after-school program.
Museum to welcome archaeologist
WEIRTON — The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center will welcome archaeologist John Boleigh at 11 a.m. Nov 2 at the museum, located at 3149 Main St. Boleigh will give a presentation on prehistoric Ohio and West Virginia.
The public is encouraged to attend the free event. Refreshments will be provided.
Ride for Raya fundraiser set
MINGO JUNCTION — A Ride for Raya benefit run is scheduled to take place Nov. 2 at Rutt’s Cross Creek Tavern, located at 3299 county Road 74 in Mingo Junction.
Signups will begin at 10 a.m., with the first bike set to go out at noon, organizers stated. All bikes will return at 5 p.m.
All types of vehicles are welcome to participate in the fundraiser.
The cost will be $10 per person, with activities to include dinner, a Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing and a live auction.
Raya, daughter of Kristen Boilegh and Anthony Risley, was diagnosed with a rare type of eye cancer known as retinoblastoma, having a tumor in the back of her eye.
Treatment consisted of having her eye removed and she will need to receive a prosthetic. She faces multiple procedures, treatments and testing at the Cleveland Clinic, according to her parents.

Wreaths sought for library
WELLSBURG — Area residents can display their creativity and simultaneously support Brooke County Public Libraries in a special event scheduled to be held Dec. 7.
The Friends of Brooke County Libraries are seeking donations of wreaths. These decorations can be holiday or non-holiday themed. Each wreath should have a base no larger than 18 inches.
The wreaths will be put up for bid during a silent auction that will take place as part of the annual Festival of Wreaths event.
The auction will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 7 in the library’s River Room. Proceeds will benefit programs and materials offered by the libraries.
A minimum bid will be posted for each wreath. Wreaths which are not sold will be returned to their owners.
Wreaths should be brought to the Wellsburg library by 5 p.m. Dec. 6.

Band alumni being sought
TORONTO — Kirk George, former director of the Toronto High School Band, is working to re-establish the Toronto Alumni Band for a performance that will take place next year, marking the group’s 100th anniversary.
“What we’d like to do is fill the football field with alumni,” George said of the performance. A date has yet to be determined.
George noted as many as 70 to 200 former Toronto band members have participated in past reunions, and he is hopeful many will be taking part in next year’s reunion, as well.
