Wellsburg High School Alumni Association awards scholarships
WELLSBURG — Several Brooke High School graduates have received an assist from the Wellsburg High School Alumni Association in pursuing their college educations.
The group has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to each of the following students: Abigail Calvert, Alexis Cipoletti, Allison Craft, Jacob Donley, Jaclin Hedmond, Eddie Marks, Brooke Ohler and Cole Sperlazza.
Nancy Patterson, a leader of the group, said in addition to being outstanding students, the recipients must have a family member who was a graduate of Wellsburg High School.
This year’s recipients have many diverse goals.
Calvert plans to study nursing at West Liberty University, while Craft has enrolled in the Trinity Health System School of Nursing.
Cipolletti plans to study exercise physiology at West Virginia University and become a physician’s assistant.
Donley plans to major in electrical or mechanical engineering at WVU, and Hedmond plans to major in biology at WVU.
Marks plans to study sports medicine at West Virginia Wesleyan College while playing soccer, and Ohler plans to study biochemistry at Marshall University, where she has signed to play soccer.
And Sperlazza plans to major in sports marketing at WLU.
Patterson said since the alumni association was formed in 1988, it has set aside scholarship funds for Brooke graduates but the amount has increased from one $500 scholarship to several thanks to the generosity of Wellsburg’s many graduates.
She said the group currently is comprised of 2,050 members, including current and former residents. She noted membership has dropped from as many as 6,000 as alumni have died.
