Weirton resident Cecilia Kallay celebrates her 100th birthday
WEIRTON — Cecilia Cwiczynski Kallay celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at the Weirton Geriatric Center on July 6.
Born June 6, 1922, she is the daughter of the late Leon and Mary Cwiczynski. Her sister Stella Cwiczynski and brother Ted are deceased.
Cecilia and her husband, Ernie, were married in December 1941 and raised five children in the home they built on Weirton Heights and lived in together until Ernie’s death in 2010. An empty lot below the house served as a baseball and football field for the whole neighborhood.
Cecilia and Ernie were active members of Sacred Heart of Mary Parish where they sang in the adult choir. Ernie was a retired Weirton Steel employee and a World War II veteran who enjoyed bowling, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and visiting his children and grandchildren.
Besides her church activities, Cecilia enjoyed gardening and baking, especially fruit pies with ingredients from her garden.
Her children are Karen Kallay of Redondo Beach, Calif.; Kevin Kallay, also of California; Ernie Jr. of Kalida, Ohio; Tom Kallay of North Carolina; and Jerry Kallay of Richmond, Ohio. She has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
