STEUBENVILLE — AMVETS Post 275 is resuming the tradition of reading the names of those service members who were previously listed as Prisoners of War or Missing in Action as part of POW/MIA Recognition Day.

“We will begin reading the names on the list from Sept. 23, 2019, through Friday, beginning promptly at 11 a.m.,” explained Dan Wilson, AMVETS Post 275 commander.

“This year there are already 289 names on the list to be read,” Wilson said, noting the reading ceremony will take place at the Combat Veteran Support Group meeting room, 500 Market St., third floor, Steubenville.

“Due to ongoing COVID-19 risks, we will be reading the names; however, we are not opening the ceremony to the public so we can maintain social distancing,” Wilson said.

The full list of names and more information can be found on Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Recently Accounted for website at https://www.dpaa.mil/Our-Missing/Recently-Accounted-For.

“We do ask the public to set aside some time on Friday to celebrate those who have been repatriated and returned to their families,” he added.

More than 81,600 Americans remain missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and the Gulf Wars and other conflicts. Out of the more than 81,600 missing, 75 percent of the losses are located in the Indo-Pacific, and more than 41,000 of the missing are presumed lost at sea (i.e. ship losses, known aircraft water losses, etc.).

“This is always a very moving ceremony,” Wilson said.
