DAR Fort Steuben Chapter gives thanks for local WWII veterans

STEUBENVILLE — The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 11 at Historic Fort Steuben that included a Patriot Day commemoration program and the presence of honored guests.

They were four World War II veterans introduced by First Vice Regent Francine Hauldren and presented certificates of appreciation by Regent Vickie Joseph.

Recognized were Gabriel Arlia and Leonard Masci, U.S. Marines; William Rhinehart, U.S. Army Corps; and Andrew Senecal, U.S. Army.

The meeting included the invocation and blessing led by Nancy Courtney, chaplain. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barbara Starkey, flag chairman. The American’s Creed was led by Second Vice Regent Mary Ann Jesse and the national anthem by Roberta Fedoush

Prospective members attending were Joy Siers and Jean Simco.

The president general’s message was read by Tammy Kotyk, president general project chairman.

Minutes of the last meeting were presented by Recording Secretary Janet Rymer. The treasurer’s report was given by Patti D’Aurora

Under committee reports, it was noted that Tammy Kotyk, Sue Davidson and Patti D’Aurora volunteered to be on the nominating committee.

Nancy Valles and Vickie Joseph are the new Junior American Citizenship chairmen.

In a 100th anniversary committee report, Janet Rymer said the banquet will be held May 14, 2022, and provided other information about the gala.

Regarding the chapter’s scholarship committee, there is a new format and a new chairman, Melinda Young. Members were encouraged to consider donating to this tax-deductible scholarship fund.

Under new business, it was noted that the chapter’s dedication of the bench at Historic Fort Steuben was acknowledged in the national DAR newsletter.

Parliamentarian Nancy Valles gave a report on the fall fun fair.

For DAR Day of Service, members were bring cans of tuna to the Oct. 9 meeting. They will be donated to the Cancer Dietary Initiative.

Constitution Week was to be observed Sept. 17-23.

The flag that was flown over the Capitol and a certificate noting that were received from U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta.

The DAR has a podcast.

The chapter acknowledged that the Urbana DAR will mark its 125th anniversary on Oct. 16.

The chapter’s next meeting will be held Oct. 9 at noon at Giovanni’s Restaurant in Weirton.

Courtney gave the benediction.
