Friends of Beatty Park are

planning two nature walks

STEUBENVILLE — The Friends of Beatty Park are planning a nature walk at the park on Aug. 13, beginning at 6 p.m., and a second one as well on Aug. 29, beginning at 9 a.m.

Participants can meet at the park entrance for the nature walks led by John Boileigh, who works for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and is a botanist, archaeologist and nature enthusiast.

“He has offered nature walks and hikes through Beatty Park in the past, and those participating told me that he was so interesting, knowledgeable and entertaining,” noted Flora VerStratten-Merrin of the group.

All ages are welcome. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. The walks are free and open to the public.

“This is one of many activities and events that the Friends of Beatty Park Group are planning,” she added. Questions can be directed to her on the Friends of Beatty Park Facebook page or text or call (740) 632-4453.

In the event that it is raining or storming, the hikes will be rescheduled for a later date.

Beatty Park is located at 711 Lincoln Ave. and is a 99-acre nature preserve in the city of Steubenville. The park has a deep ravine with a creek and plenty of tree canopy throughout most of the five developed trails throughout the park, to provide shade and comfort for hiking during the hot summer months, according to VerStratten-Merrin.

The Friends of Beatty Park constitute a group dedicated to revitalizing the forgotten nature preserve. VerStraten-Merrin is spearheading the project and organizing projects and volunteer work dates. She can be contacted at (740) 632-4453 or join the “Friends of Beatty Park” Facebook group.

“We will be organizing a historical walk in October, and it will be big,” she noted. “We will have ‘stations’ set up throughout Beatty with an ‘expert’ at each historical location. If someone is unable to walk to that historical location in the park, they will be given a historical handout for any stops that they are unable to walk to. This will be a well-planned event, and we are hoping to accept donations to help with costs for brochures/maps and other items and projects within the park. All of the volunteers have donated their own tools, gas and most important their time to continue to make improvements to Beatty,” she added.

Recipients of scholarships

for $28,000 are announced

WEIRTON — This year the Joan Bieberson McDonald/Frank E. McDonald Scholarship Fund has awarded scholarships totaling $28,000 to former and current Weir High students.

This year’s first-year recipients, who were awarded a total of $11,000, include Olivia Michelle Bernola, Elijah James Gillette, Zachary Frank Guiddy and Brodie Ryan McUmar.

Re-applying recipients, who were awarded a total of $17,000, are Allison Fuccy, Luka Kevin Haught, Samantha Kaczmarek, Matthew Komorowski, Kristen Mastrantoni, Caleb Samuel Owen and Anita Village.

Since its inception in 2001, this scholarship fund has awarded 76 Weir High students a total of $427,000. These scholarships, endowed by Frank “Skeets” McDonald in memory of his wife, are unique, a spokesperson explained. Scholarship monies may be used for any type of post-secondary education — trade school, junior or community college or four-year and graduate schools.

The awards may be applied toward tuition, books or other expenses associated with furthering a recipient’s education. Additionally, each recipient is eligible to re-apply for an additional scholarship award for the remainder of the student’s post-high school education or training. The scholarships, which are, at a minimum $1,000 per year, are based upon need, rather than grade averages.

A successful applicant must have participated either in band or high school athletics, whether as an athlete, manager or cheerleader. Incoming Weir High students who are interested in applying for this scholarship should contact the school’s guidance counselor.

McDonald, who died in 2003, also endowed a similar scholarship at Wheeling Park High School.

Pick up your T-shirt from Campbell-Dickinson event

TORONTO — Come and get your T-shirt.

That’s the word from George Komar, co-chair of the 10th-annual Campbell-Dickinson 5K, the Noah Long Kid’s 1K and the St. Baldrick’s Shave Off that had been scheduled for March 21 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic precautions.

The fundraiser events were to be rescheduled in August or September, but that plan has since been abandoned.

But for those who had signed up and were to receive a race T-shirt, however, dates and times have been established to do so in alphabetical groups.

The T-shirt distribution will be held at the Toronto gazebo at the corner of North Third and Market streets. Those who pick up T-shirts are asked to wear a mask.

Shirts will be distributed as follows:

≤ A to K — Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

≤ L to Z — Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

≤ L to Z — Aug. 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

≤ A to K — Aug. 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Friends can pick up T-shirts for others. For those unable to make arrangements, the shirts will be held until the March 20, 2021, event.

Questions can be directed to (740) 537-9500 or (740) 317-3947.

Steubenville Kiwanis won’t

be selling roses this year, but…

STEUBENVILLE — Although the Steubenville Kiwanis Club will not be taking orders to sell long-stemmed roses by the dozen this year, the popular fundraiser will return in 2021, members vowed at their first in-person meeting held since the coronavirus pandemic precautions brought a halt to public gatherings.

With masks and social distancing observed, Kiwanians met July 28 at Bella Hall in Steubenville, where they voted not to conduct this year’s sale. Normally, orders are being taken now with local deliveries made in mid-September.

Members expressed gratitude for the public’s past support of the fundraiser and look forward to their orders with the 2021 sale.

For the interim, the Kiwanis are electing to meet for a noon luncheon and business meeting at Bella Hall on the last Tuesday of the month.

The club’s new officers will be installed at the end of September.
