BRILLIANT — The Brilliant Lions Club recently held an outdoor meeting at the Brilliant Park picnic area

David Porter, president, opened with the pledge to the flag and a prayer, stepping down after the induction of the new president. Porter was praised for his work throughout the year and attained the “Lion of the Year” award in 2019.

Terry Snyder, Ohio Lions governor, was on hand to install new officers for the club year, with Butch Ford serving as president. Other leaders are: Jim Everson, first vice president; Ralph Nickoson, second vice president; Joe Matthews, third vice president; Tom Connell, secretary; John Goosman and Esther McCoy, assistant secretaries; Ron Retzer, treasurer; Don Hutchison, assistant treasurer; Don Grant, Lion tamer and assistant secretary; Mike Rusnak, tail twister; Frank Noble and Kevin Huggans, two-year trustees; and Charles Bane and Jim Harmon, one-year trustees.

Donations were given to the local fire department and Brilliant Little League. Members assisted the Brilliant American Legion Post 573 with putting flags on the graves of 600 veterans in the area for Memorial Day. A wheelchair and other portable necessities were donated to a resident in the village.

As a cleanup project, Nickoson cut down dead trees in the area with the help of his granddaughters.

Snyder was presented a gift of appreciation from the club and thanked members for it.

“The projects you do as members make me look good,” Snyder said. “Your used eyeglass collection will be taken to the district celebration in Medina at the end of June,” she added.

William Snyder, her husband, said that he had stepped down as Mingo Junction Club president so he could be a chauffeur for his wife in all the duties she would be involved in over the year.

Mary Ellen Petrozzi of Smithfield brought two boxes of plastic bottle caps that she had collected from the years in her now-closed florist shop in Smithfield.

Terry Snyder planned to take them and ones collected by club members to the district meeting. The caps are used in making Buddy Benches.

The club’s next meeting will be announced by Ford.
