Library: Digitally flip

through many magazines

STEUBENVILLE — The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County is closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s still possible to digitally flip through popular magazines for free.

Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator, explained that there are two resources on the website to access magazines — Flipster and the Ohio Digital Library.

People can visit the library’s website at www.steubenvillelibrary.org to get started.

Flipster is a database that has magazines that include Motorcyclist, Money and Food Network Magazine just to name a few. Categories include politics, business, science and cooking. “It’s easy to download,” Cesta commented. “On the library’s website go to the ‘e-resources’ tab then to ‘databases’ and scroll until you see Flipster. Click on one or multiple magazines of choice to instantly read.”

The Ohio Digital Library, OverDrive has magazines relating to health, lifestyle, automotive and entertainment among many others. “Customers will recognize titles such as Good Housekeeping, Taste of Home and Popular Mechanics,” Cesta noted. On the library’s website, go to the “e-books” tab then to “newsstand” for this collection of magazines. “You also can read magazines using the OverDrive app or the Libby, by OverDrive app,” she added.

For those who need a library card, call the main library at (740 ) 282-9782 on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to register by phone.

Sycamore online concert

features singer-songwriter

STEUBENVILLE — The Sycamore Sings “Songs of Hope” online concert series will be hosting a free online concert featuring multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Ben-David Warner at 7 p.m. on May 24 through Facebook Live on the Sycamore Youth Center Facebook page.

The performance is a component of the Sycamore Youth Center’s “Songs of Hope” event in which online donations will be received to help fund and sustain after-school programming for more than 300 students in the Upper Ohio Valley. The series is an alternative fundraiser in light of the cancellation of the center’s annual fundraising dinner originally scheduled for March 12.

Warner lives with one foot in the choral music world and one in the folk music world, according to a news release that notes the former member of Scythian currently is a choral conducting student at CUA, a church music director, as well as a touring folk musician showcasing a blend of Irish Americana.

Trained on the classical violin, Warner plays guitar, banjo, fiddle and “just about anything with strings that he can get his hands on.” Ed Helms’ The Bluegrass Situation praises his “Built These Walls” as a “blue-collar ballad we can all get behind.” He recorded his debut solo album Red Rockin’ Chair in 2015. He played in front of 6,000 as the headline act at the Irish “First Friday” event held by the Harmonium Project in Steubenville last summer.

His May 24 performance repertoire will include Irish Americana and folk music.

For information, contact Bobbyjon Bauman, the center’s founder and director, at (608) 556-3068 or go to www.sycamorecenter.com.
