The First Christian Church of Weirton, represented by Janet Ford, left, outreach chair, recently donated five cases of peanut butter and jelly to the Weirton Elementary Backpack Program, which was accepted by Shanna Early, program coordinator, Weirton Elementary. Backpack food programs provide nutritious, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to children to ensure they get enough food on weekends and holidays to avoid hunger when they can’t depend on school meals, a church spokesperson explained. Hoping to help alleviate hunger in the children of Weirton, the church began donating during the 2015-16 school year and since then, has donated 3,000 jars of peanut butter and 2,816 jars of jelly, mainly through the efforts of Ford, who collects money and/or jars of peanut butter and jelly from church members and others, buys the food and delivers it to the school. To contribute to the program, call the church at (304) 797-7300 and leave a message for Ford.
