NEW CUMBERLAND — On Oct. 5, the New Cumberland Garden Club installed and dedicated a Gold Star Memorial Highway marker near the gazebo in New Cumberland.

The marker honors all families who have lost a loved one who died while serving in the armed forces. About 50 people attended the ceremony which recognized three local Gold Star families who were in attendance.

The new marker sits next to the Blue Star marker which was installed last year and honors all men and women who have served in any branch of the military.

Carolyn McCafferty, former state garden club president and current president of the Southern Atlantic Region garden clubs, read the dedication before the marker was unveiled.

Members of the New Cumberland Garden Club placed a wreath at the base of the marker, and members of the Tri-State Young Marines provided a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of taps.

Local musician John Edwards led the crowd in the singing of the national anthem and “God Bless America.”

Refreshments were served in the gazebo after the ceremony.
