Nominations being accepted for Jaycees Outstanding award

CHARLESTON — Nominations are being accepted for the 2020 West Virginia Jaycees Outstanding Young West Virginian award, according to West Virginia Junior Chamber State President Eureka Ellison.

Ellison said that the program is designed to identify and award young people in the Mountain State who have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or through community service.

“The mission of the West Virginia Junior Chamber, also known as Jaycees, is to promote leadership development and community engagement among young people,” said Ellison. “This prestigious annual award serves to recognize individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who exemplify the best attributes of the state’s young active citizens through service or professional achievement.”

Honorees selected in past years have represented the heights of progress in all human endeavors with a special emphasis on volunteerism and community service.

In recent years, Logan native and America’s Got Talent winner Landau Eugene Murphy was honored for professional achievement and for raising more than $1 million for charities in West Virginia. Another recent honoree was Grace Pritt of Hurricane, who was recognized for her humanitarianism and volunteer work which included a year-long trip to the Philippines, Swaziland and Nicaragua to help people in need.

Up to three individuals will be recognized at a banquet in Wheeling on Feb. 8. The ceremony will highlight their achievement in narrative form and provide a stage from which the honorees can challenge and inspire young people from around the state. For each honoree, there will be a video presentation profiling his/her accomplishments, followed by the trophy presentation and an acceptance speech.

Recipients at the state level automatically are nominated for consideration for the U.S. Junior Chamber Ten Outstanding Young Americans award, a nationally known recognition program in existence since 1939. Nominations are received in each of the following 10 categories: 1. business, economic, and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment; 2. political, legal, and/or governmental affairs; 3. academic leadership and/or accomplishment; 4. cultural achievement; 5. moral and/or environmental leadership; 6. contribution to children, 7. world peace, and/or human rights; 8. humanitarian and/or voluntary; scientific and/or technological development; 9. personal improvement and/or accomplishment and 10. medical innovation.

Nominations are due by Dec. 2. For information and nomination instructions, go to OYWVaward.org or call (304) 312-6645.
