The Brooke County Agriculture Day Committee has awarded its first-place trophy for sunflower growth to Deedra Groves of Weirton. Her 6-foot, 3-inch plants were the tallest entered, plus the 6 1/2- inch head also was the largest entered. Burpee Seed Co. provided sunflower packets for all Brooke County School fifth-graders in May, when AG Day was again held at Brooke Hills Park. Students were able to either cook and eat the seeds,or plant them to raise for the contest at the Brooke County Fair. While most of the flowers she grew were yellow, some were scarlet, which she said surprised her. While this marked the 10th year for the Brooke County fifth-grade AG Day, it was the first time for the sunflower contest.
