Jefferson County Farm Bureau

announces scholarship awards

WINTERSVILLE — The 2019 recipients of the two $500 Jefferson County Farm Bureau scholarships to Zachary Barnett and Kayla Wood have been announced.

Barnett, the son of Jennifer and Robert Barnett of Wintersville, is a recent graduate of Indian Creek High School. He was involved in various extracurricular activities, including the baseball and football teams, Key Club, National Honor Society, Envirothon, Robotics and Engineering Contraption Teams. He will be attending West Virginia University, majoring in petroleum and natural gas engineering.

Wood, the daughter of Ted and Alana Wood of Bloomingdale, is a 2019 graduate of Edison Local High School where she was active in the Spanish Club, National Beta Club, varsity volleyball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Future Farmers of America. She is a member of the Purple Circle 4-H Club and attends the Hopedale Church of Christ. She will be majoring in nursing at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The Farm Bureau is a grassroots membership organization that works to support the state’s food and farm community, according to Michele Specht, organization director, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.

Tri-State Marine Corps Club

Auxiliary picnic on Sept. 21

WEIRTON — Vice President Darlene Kemp opened the Aug. 12 meeting of the Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary.

Chaplain Mary Ann Smith offered the prayer that included a special prayer list provided by Marcy Spano.

Marcy Spano gave the treasurer’s report and Marcy Spano read the minutes from the July meeting.

The auxiliary will be looking for shirts in the coming months, it was announced.

Janice Raush will be the hostess for the Sept. 9 meeting that will begin at 6 p.m. Barbara Glessner will be bringing stockings, which members will fill in November.

Jo-Ann Johns won the 50-50 drawing, donating it back to the club.

The Tri-State Marine Corps Club and auxiliary will hold their picnic from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Get Togethers picnic grounds in Kings Creek, Weirton.

Marcy Spano read the revised by laws to the members. The nominating committee will meet in the middle of October.

Retired railroaders having

monthly breakfast meetings

CHESTER — A monthly meeting welcoming all retired railroaders and crafts meets on the last Thursday of the month.

Retirees are encouraged to meet at 11 a.m. for breakfast at EJ’s Restaurant, located at 807 Carolina Ave. A spokesperson noted any retired railroader is invited. The purpose of the meetings is to help protect railroad pensions and help keep an eye on legislation that may affect them. It also is to foster a sense of solidarity. Toronto pool party

scheduled for Thursday

TORONTO — The city of Toronto, in conjunction with the Toronto American Legion Post 86, is hosting a pool party from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday. All city residents and Legion members are invited. Admission is free.

Weirton library hosting used book sales on three Saturdays

WEIRTON — The Mary H. Weir Public Library, 3442 Main St., Weirton, will be holding the last of three used book sales on Saturday.

It will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in the library’s garage on Walnut Street. Parking is available in the rear of the building. Books will be sold individually or by the bag.
