SMITHFIELD — Scholarship presentations were the highlight of the Italian American Cultural Club’s May meeting held at Le Chateau Pier in Smithfield

The club presented $1,000 scholarships to Joelle “Joey” Tarquinio in memory of Teresa Zryini; Maia Talarico in memory of Bob Ryan; Samantha Kaczmarek in memory of Augie Avoli; Carlo Recinella in memory of Denise Manini; and Paul Carapellotti in memory of Craig Petrella.

The club also made other monetary donations to various organizations. Sarah Gorman of the Ohio Valley Youth Network and Will Davis of Vagabond Missions each received $500 checks. Sophie Schoolcraft of Mingo Social Services and Stan Dombroski of the Smithfield Friends Church Food Pantry each received checks for $300.

The meeting also included Todd Piergallini of Le Chateau Pier giving club President Frankie DiCarlantonio a $250 scholarship donation, which was followed by DiCarlantonio’s presenting Piergallini with a plaque in appreciation of Todd and his family’s “years of support and labor of love that they have given the club.”

The group’s June meeting was held at St. Florian Event Center in Wintersville.

DiCarlantonio discussed the traveling locations for the club meetings as well as the comment cards. The members voted on traveling to two meeting places instead of one, but the actual locations were not selected. Members who attended at least one meeting during the last meetings of traveling will receive a packet of information to vote for the locations. They can be brought to the July meeting or mailed, it was noted. The votes will be counted, and the board will make the final decision. Members will be informed by postcard before the September meeting of the locations and dates.

Michele Fabbro discussed the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival which will be held in Wheeling July 26-28.
