Candids from Community Stars evening

Some of the more than 200 area residents who attended the event -- Janice Kiaski

To me, the Community Stars banquet is like your Christmas tree — every year we put one up, decorate it and step back to admire it.

And every year we catch ourselves saying the same thing — that’s the prettiest tree ever, the best one yet!

It’s not that last year’s tree or the tree the year before and so on wasn’t beautiful, it’s just that the present tree always brings present appreciation and renewed awe over one symbol of the season.

That’s Community Stars to me — a reminder that no matter how bad newspaper headlines might be some days, there is always good news to report, that there are good people doing good things all around us.

And, it’s often in an unassuming quiet way that nonetheless has a strong, lasting impact.

The Community Stars banquet held Sept. 17 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner in Steubenville honored another class of area residents who make a difference in one way or another, and what a privilege it was to be in their company.

Some of these stars I know, and others I was meeting for the first time. It was good, too, to see so many supporters in the audience, there to confirm that, yep, the Tri-State Area is a galaxy of some pretty amazing individuals.

This marked the 21st year the newspaper has done this event, and it has been a pleasure to be a part of it since its started in 1998.

Hats off to the 2018 stars — June Crago, Sandy Day, Jim Freiling, Patricia Herring, Leia Hunt, Linda McFerren, Mark Nelson, David and Barbara Snyder, Tom Straka, Carolyn Walker and Mary Zimmerman.

And hats off as well to, Greg and Debbie Froehlich and staff for being such wonderful hosts and for the great banquet fare.

Kudos also go out to presenting sponsor Weirton Medical Center and to M&M True Value Hardware for special support.

Way to shine!
