CADIZ — The fourth-annual Fall Smoke Out Truck and Tractor Pull will be held Sept. 29 at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Cadiz with this year’s fundraiser focusing on Addie Edwards, a teenager who is fighting skin cancer.

Admission is $5 per person for all the events on the fairgrounds, including the car show, new this year, and a craft show. There also will be food.

The “Pulling for a Cure” fundraiser includes the truck and tractor pull that starts at 3 p.m., according to Tina Jones, event spokesperson, who noted that last year, it had around 120 hooks.

But there will be other activities, too, beginning earlier.

“This is our fourth year for having the Fall Smoke Out,” Tina said. “Every year we try to focus on a certain cancer. The first year was breast cancer, the second year was childhood cancer and last year was colon cancer. This year, our focus will be on skin cancer,” she explained.

The idea for the pull originated with Zack Jones, the son of Jon and Tina Jones. An eight-year childhood cancer survivor, Zack was 14 when he was first diagnosed with Undifferentiated Embryonal Sarcoma.

“He is now 22 years old and was just married this past April,” his mother said. “Zack and his wife, Cheyenne, live on the family farm near Deersville. When Zack was battling cancer, he was given a pulling tractor built for him through generous donations from five states. Zack wanted to start the pull to help others battling cancer. Everyone was so generous and helpful to him and his family when he was sick that he wanted a way to pay it forward,” she explained.

Jon and Tina joined with a few of their friends to help Zach get the pull started.

The past three years the pull has donated more than $20,000 to different hospitals and cancer research facilities, according to Tina. The committee also helps local individuals by donating to them to assist with any expenses they choose to use it for, she noted.

“Our pull this year will be honoring 17-year-old Addie Edwards from Cadiz, who is battling Gorlin Syndrome, a type of skin cancer,” Tina explained. The daughter of Amy Edwards of Cadiz and Roger Edwards of Germano, Addie is a freshman at the Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute.

Last year the Pulling for a Cure event added a craft vendor show organized by Elisha Palmer, whose son Drew was honored at the second pull, which focused on childhood cancer.

“Drew lost his battle with cancer a few week before the pull that year,” Tina said.

The craft show also is located on the fairgrounds in the commercial building. It will start at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.

“Elisha uses the funds raised to help raise awareness and funding for childhood cancer,” Tina said. “She also helps families at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh by donating personal hygiene items, gas cards and meal vouchers. She also does Halloween treat bags for the children undergoing treatment.”

This year’s fundraiser includes the addition of the Carl Butterfield Memorial Car Show, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and awards presented at 2 p.m. The registration fee for cars is $5.

The Harrison County Farm Bureau runs the concession stand every year, and in the infield will be Gary’s Hot Rod BBQ.

There will be a concession stand provided by the Harrison County 4-H Committee by the commercial building during the car and craft show.
