WELLSBURG — Area residents seeking a professional to prepare their tax returns for 2016 have another option with the opening of the Liberty Tax Service’s office at 1438 Commerce St.

The office, which also offers tax preparation to businesses and other accounting services, is one of five — including a Weirton location — co-owned by franchisee Tim Gilmore of Boardman and one of thousands throughout the U.S. in the Liberty Tax Service chain founded by John Hewitt in 1998.

As an Internal Revenue Service-enrolled agent, the Wellsburg office is qualified to represent taxpayers in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The designation is the highest credential awarded by the IRS to tax professionals who pass a three-part comprehensive test and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

Gilmore said not only does the Liberty Tax Service offer income tax preparation at an affordable cost, it offers financial incentives to those who bring their tax returns to Liberty.

He said Liberty Tax customers can receive $50 for each friend or family member they refer to Liberty and who files by Feb. 22.

Gilmore added Liberty’s customers may obtain an advance through Republic Bank & Trust on their tax refund for up to $1,300 through Feb. 28.

Among those staffing the Wellsburg office are Paula Castner of Brilliant, who has 10 years of experience in tax preparation; and Richard Krisak, who operated his own accounting office at Liberty’s location before his recent retirement.

For customers’ convenience, the office will be open during tax season from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments can be made by calling (304) 737-1595.
