Mail call: A Main Street resident said she heard someone kicking her door and discovered it was a man who’d been squatting at her home “for some time” before she moved in, Tuesday. She said he asked her if there was any mail for him. When she told him there was none and she was calling police, he left.

Charged: Heather D. Smith, 40, Union Avenue, Steubenville, domestic violence, Tuesday. Smith allegedly threatened an individual with a machete during an argument. The other party claims Smith threatened them and showed a video of Smith holding the machete’s scabbard in one hand and the other behind her back, police reported. The complainant said Smith put her hand behind her back “because she knew she was being recorded.” Smith admitted holding the scabbard but denied having a knife in her hand.

Walk off: Employees at Kroger report a man tried to leave the store with $300 in merchandise he hadn’t paid for, Tuesday. They said when the cart’s wheels locked up in the vestibule, he grabbed a trash can and left the store.

Pure politics: A Logan Avenue resident reported someone stole an election sign from her yard, Tuesday.

Harassment: A Plum Street resident said a woman who got a protection order against her came to her door twice trying to get her to answer, Tuesday. She showed police security footage of the woman knocking on her door.

Freeloading: A Stanton Boulevard business owner said a woman pulled up to his dumpster and unloaded her trash, Tuesday. He told police when he told her she can’t do that, she “backed up and sped away.”

Printed word: An Oak Grove Avenue resident said someone sprayed an obscene suggestion on the driver’s door of his truck, Tuesday. He told police he suspects a man with whom he’s had ongoing issues and believes the blue paint sprayed on his truck matches the blue paint the other man has used at his property.

Yelling: A Maryland Avenue resident said a juvenile with whom he’s had ongoing problems walked in front of his residence and yelled an obscene phrase at him, Tuesday.

Booked: Bernard J. Brown, 58, 1130 Oak Grove Ave., Steubenville, warrant for misdemeanor theft, Tuesday.

Code issues: Notices of violation were mailed to the owners/occupants of a property at 621 Linden Ave., garbage and household litter scattered on property, and also to individuals whose names were found in garbage strewn on a vacant property next to the residence as well as a city parcel across the street. Police said “the same garbage and bags” were found on all three properties. Notices also were sent to the owners/occupants of properties at 1402 Oregon Ave., couch set in back yard; 539 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, high grass/weeds.

Cited: Jaelynn A. Royal, 25, 443 Charles St., Wellsburg, (speeding); Tamara Jacobs, 22, 655 Broadway Boulevard, Apt. 1, Steubenville, no operator’s license and a stop sign violation after a collision Monday at Fifth and Clinton streets; Christian A. Warner, 47, 119 Opal Blvd., Steubenville, no operator’s license.

Seeing things: A man told deputies his mother is being held against her will because he heard her head banging on her wall, Tuesday. Deputies spoke to the woman, who said she’d been sleeping and did not bang her head against the wall, so they spoke with her son “who also thought he was being chased by a man with a gun.” They said the man “appeared to be under the influence of some type of narcotic.” His mother took charge of him.

Rough housing: A Wintersville woman said three young boys were throwing rocks at her house, Tuesday. She told deputies she believes they also broke a solar light playing hide-and-seek in her yard and asked them to tell the kids to stay off her property. Deputies relayed the message to the mother of the juveniles.

Entered: A Rayland woman said someone entered her home while she was out and “completely ransacked” it, Monday. She told deputies she returned home to find her front door open and said it’s happened a few times recently, but this time someone rifled through her dresser drawers and boxes. She said she has no idea what they were looking for but did notice a small box of over-the-counter pills missing.

Noise makers: A Mingo Junction woman said she saw three men inside a vehicle “making a loud racket,” Tuesday. Deputies spoke with the men, who said they drove here from Georgia to renovate the home.
