Driver in fatal truck crash sentenced to 9 years in prison
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The impaired truck driver who caused a crash on I-75 near Dayton in 2018 that ended in the death of a doctor and serious injuries to her two passengers was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison.
Thomas A. Massey, of Georgia, was found guilty July 2 of one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of aggravated vehicular assault for the collision in which 46-year-old Candace Flaugher sustained fatal injuries.
Massey was traveling northbound on the interstate on April 23, 2018, when he failed to slow for traffic and rammed into the rear of Flaugher’s vehicle. His blood later tested positive for mephamphetamine and amphetamine.
Flaugher, a physician, left the hospital April 30, 2018, but died upon her return May 5.
Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said Massey’s driver’s license also has been suspended for life.
