STEUBENVILLE — One bad stretch doomed Big Red.

The New Philadelphia boys basketball team ripped off a big run in the third quarter and did not look back, en route to a 71-53 victory against Steubenville Friday night inside the Crimson Center.

The score was tied at 37 in the third when New Philadelphia produced a 19-2 run in the course of a few minutes to break the game wide open.

“We had a three-minute stretch there where, I don’t think, we got into our offense,” Big Red (16-5) head coach Mike Haney said. “We had like four turnovers in a row, and they went down and scored. They are too good of a team to give a lead like that to.”

Big Red led 34-33 at halftime, but the hosts could not sustain the momentum it built in the first half.

James Roundtree recorded a team-high 12 points to lead the way for Big Red, while Josh Zimmerman netted 12 points and Jorian Jones ended up with 11. Calvin Bickerstaff finished with eight points, while grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.

Noah Begue tallied a game-high 23 points to lead the way for New Philadelphia, while Brock Chumney collected 16. Matt Voll contributed 11 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

The Quakers (18-4) outscored Big Red, 23-9, in the third to turn a one-point deficit at halftime into a 56-43 advantage heading into the fourth.

Haney wanted his team to play a tough team heading into the sectional tournament, and New Philadelphia definitely fit the bill.

“Both teams benefited from this game,” Haney said. “Unfortunately, we lost this game. Lucky for us, this was not a tournament game. It was just our last game of the regular season. Now, we will prepare for the winner of the Minerva-Philo game.”

The Quakers built a 19-10 advantage in the first quarter, forcing Haney to call timeout. Big Red responded and scored the final four points of the quarter to make the score 19-14 going into the second.

Big Red delivered the first four points of the second quarter to make it an 8-0 run and to pull within one point.

Later, a 3-pointer by Begue gave the Quakers a 28-21 advantage, but Big Red battled back and took a 31-30 lead on a basket by Zimmerman. After another 3-pointer by Begue regained the advantage for New Philadelphia, Jordan Wallace drained a 3-pointer to give Big Red the lead at halftime.

New Philadelphia made 10 3-pointers in the game, with Begue connecting on seven of them.

Big Red is scheduled to play next in an Division II Eastern District sectional semifinal against either Philo or Minerva at 7 p.m. on March 2 inside the Crimson Center. Big Red is the No. 3 seed in the district.

The Electrics are the No. 10 seed, while the Lions are the No. 13 seed, and the two teams are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday out at Philo.

“We will have five days to prepare,” Haney said. “We will give them the weekend off to recover their legs, and then we hope to have five good days of practice to get ready.”

Grag Haberfield is the head coach of the Electrics. Haberfield previously served as the head coach at Buckeye Local from 2013-2017 when he was named the Division II Eastern District coach of the year. That season, he led the No. 8 seed Panthers to a 65-64 victory over No. 1 seed Big Red in a sectional semifinal inside the Crimson Center.

New Philadelphia is scheduled to open up play in a Division II sectional semifinal against West Holmes at 7 p.m. on March 2. The Quakers are the No. 1 seed in the district, while the Knights are the No. 19 seed.
