CCHS girls unable to beat Linsly

STEUBENVILLE — Linsly had the lead at the intermission, lost it in the third quarter and rallied to earn a 64-59 girls basketball victory over Catholic Central on Thursday.

The Cadets (5-9) led by as many as 10 in the second quarter, but the Crusaders (9-5) and losers of two straight cut the deficit to 32-26

Central came out on fire to start the third quarter, outscoring its guests 22-7 and was up 48-39 heading into the final frame. Christine Dombrowski had 11 of her game-high 19 points to lead the Crusaders. Edy Harold hit a couple of big baskets during the rally, and Carly Fayak swished a 3-pointer.

Linsly, thanks to a pair of Haley Heitz triples, opened the fourth with a 10-0 scoring run. The lead exchanged hands a couple of times before baskets by Brinley Steen and Molly Heron put the Cadets ahead to say. Linsly outscored Central 25-11 during the final eight minutes. Steen was outstanding down the stretch, accounting for 13 of her team’s points. She connected three times from the floor and knocked down seven free throws.

Steen finished with 18 to pace the Cadets. Heitz contributed 12. Charlie Allison added nine, while Josie Purpura and Heron evenly divided 16.

Julia Zatta scored 17 for Central, which returns to action Wednesday at Toronto, while Bella Oliver netted 10.
