Big Red girls soccer must wait to open season

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville girls soccer team was looking forward to opening the season on Friday night for the third straight season, but Mother Nature had other plans.

The game between Big Red and Cambridge was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Harding Stadium, but the start was pushed back due to lightning. The game ended up being postponed at 6:17 p.m., and the game will now be played at 6 p.m. Monday at Harding.

The game was supposed to be part of the state’s “OHSAA’s Friday Night Futbol, presented by the Columbus Crew SC”.

Big Red head coach Jared Robinson and his players were disappointed the weather would not allow the game to be played.

“No, it’s not really the way we wanted to start the season,” he said. “You can’t control the weather. You can’t control how things turn out. Everyone was really excited to play today, but it is not going to affect the girls. It just gives the girls another day to prepare and get ready. It is not the ideal start, but we will roll with it.”

The Big Red girls are primed for another strong season this year.

“We are very happy with where we are at coming into the season,” Robinson said. “We had some good scrimmages. The girls have shown improvement in a lot of ways. We have developed good team chemistry. We get better every game we play. We were hoping to play today so the girls could show what they are capable of.

“They were excited. They showed up ready to play. The girls put in a lot of hard work. They were eager to have the opportunity to show what they can do.”

This year’s team features a good amount of experience and talent.

“We have a good mix of kids,” Robinson said. “We have good upperclassmen mixed with a strong freshman class. We have a real-good mix.”

While disappointed about not being able to play, Big Red will be ready to go Monday.

“We were very eager to play, and that is always a good sign,” Robinson said. “We are disappointed, but we like the mindset of our team. They are focused on winning.”
