Servicemen, women to be honored

STEUBENVILLE — The Catholic Central Junior Crusaders and Indian Creek Junior Redskins will honor all present and past servicemen and women, as well as all police, firefighters and EMTs from the Ohio Valley during their regular season finale on Thursday at the Aquinas Gymnasium at the end of Lovers Lane.

The eighth-grade game begins at 5:30 p.m. with the seventh-grade to follow. Between games, members of the teams will pass out USA flag pins to those being honored.

Big Red to receive trophy Tuesday

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville football team will be presented with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy prior to Tuesday’s boys basketball game against John Marshall.

The presentation is a part of the 13th-annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions. Big Red finished No. 183 in the final rankings and is one of 50 schools being honored on this season’s tour.

Umpires association sets classes

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville Umpires Association will offer training for new umpires beginning Feb. 4.

The class will qualify students to officiate baseball or softball games in Ohio and West Virginia for the upcoming high school season, as well as summer and fall youth recreation leagues. The training includes the opportunity to test for state licenses.

Instruction will be by a state-certified umpire instructor with 30 years of experience. Umpiring offers good part-time career income. The minimum age is 16. Those who are interested can text or e-mail Joe Banovsky at (740) 381-9721 or jjbanovsky@aol.com.
