Big Red sits fifth after first day of OVAC tournament

WHEELING — Injuries, pins and very few upsets highlighted the first day of the 65th-annual Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament on Thursday inside WesBanco Arena.

Steubenville sits in fifth place with 35 points. Big Red also advanced 10 of its competitors.

“It went pretty much as expected,” Steubenville head coach Mike Blackburn said of the first round. “We knew a couple of matches were going to be close. Now they’ve got to come back and win in the consolation rounds for us.”

Steubenville’s Jashon Hubbard didn’t waste any time as he is seeking a fourth championship. The Ohio State University recruit pinned Shenandoah’s Jason Flaitz in 10 ticks.

Four individuals seeded in the top three of their respective weight classes had to pull out due to injuries, including two-time defending champion and top seed at 160 John Nash of Wheeling Park. The others were Meadowbrook’s three-time placer Jud Ramage (195), who was seeded No. 2, and a pair of third-seeds in Jacson Muldrew (132) of Steubenville and Harrison Central’s Owen Ott (113).

Of the 161 matches contested, 132 ended in pins, with 40 of those not lasting a full minute. There were 16 decisions, nine technical falls and four major decisions.

Only five seeded wrestlers failed to advance to the second round. They included No. 5 (152), No. 6 (220), No. 7 (126), No. 9 (170) and No. 12 (285).

Parkersburg South, which has won six of seven overall and Class 5A championships since joining the bi-state conference in 2010, leads the 41-team field with 48 points, which is 4.5 better than Beaver Local and a dozen more than Wheeling Park.

The Wood County Patriots advanced all but one of their 14 individuals, including 106-pound Devin Easton, the third seed, who claimed the quickest fall of the night in a mere 9 seconds. There were several others with 10-second pins.

The Ohio County Patriots have 10 individuals still alive for titles, including nine who won by pin.

“It was a pretty good round for us,” Wheeling Park head coach Clay Tucker said. “I wouldn’t say anyone surprised me. I think we got our kids in positions to win matches, and they went out there and took care of business. I wouldn’t have guessed that we would have that many pins, which really helps us out.

“The guys are picking up the slack and that’s what we needed.”

Barnesville and St. Clairsville also had outstanding first days. Both finished with 32 points, which is good enough for a sixth-place tie.

“Not bad for a young team,” St. Clairsville head coach Joel Sansone said of his youthful Red Devils. “We’re doing well. We won eight matches by pin. The kids came out and didn’t wrestle the arena, they wrestled their opponents. That’s huge, especially when they are that young. They came out and took care of business.”

Martins Ferry advanced four to the second round, with senior Dalton Hoover looking for his third consecutive title. He took care of Morgantown’s Tyler Yost in 19 seconds.

Head coach Chas Yoder was especially pleased with the effort of 220-pound senior Keith Wilson, who posted a dominating 11-6 nod over East Liverpool’s Skylor Wooley who was seeded No. 6.

“That was a big win for Keith,” Yoder said. “He really wrestled well today.”

Other returning champions to advance were Beaver Local’s Cole McComas (113), Oak Glen’s Peyton Hall (132), Parkersburg South’s Luke Martin (138) and Parkersburg South’s Zane Hinzman (160).

Crestview, in just its second tournament, leads Barnesville by 3.5 points in Class 3A, while Madonna has a comfortable margin in Class 1A/2A with 21.5 points. Caldwell and Shenandoah are tied for second with 12 each.

Action resumes today at noon with second-round championship bouts, along with first- and second-round consolation matchups. After a break, action heats back up at 6 with championship quarterfinal action, as well as third- and fourth-round consolation bouts.
