Beaver stands tall at Shadyside Last Man Standing

SHADYSIDE — Only four local wrestlers stood atop the podium Saturday night as the Shadyside Last Man Standing Tournament came to a close.

Bridgeport, which finished third in the team standings with 167.5 points, had half of the champions as junior Tino Kusic (160) and senior Garrett Duncan (182) ruled their respective weight classes.

Kusic, a two-time Division III state qualifier who won his 100th career match during the event, pinned Sandy Valley’s Reese Franks in 5:26 to win his title, while Duncan, who qualified for the state meet last winter, flattened Beaver Local’s Alex Solansky in 1:25.

“I was pleased with the results. We had a good weekend,” Bridgeport head coach David Nelson said. “We got a couple more kids back on the mat, so we’re getting to where we want to be for the OVACs.

“Garret was a little rusty at Brecksville last weekend, but he wrestled well today,” Nelson noted. “We would’ve liked to have gotten him a couple more matches.”

Nelson said Duncan is about 90 percent after recovering from an ATV accident prior to football season.

“He’s still getting his wind, conditioning and strength back.”

As for Kusic, Nelson knows what to expect.

“Tino went out and took care of business just like we expect him to do,” Nelson said. “He is wrestling at a high level right now.”

Shadyside’s Josh Robinson (285) and Steubenville Catholic’s Kevin Cuervo (22) were the other local titlists.

Robinson pinned Bridgeport’s Layne Dunlap in 1:48. Cuervo decisioned Bridgeport’s Levi Bryant 3-1 in overtime for his title.

“I’m happy for Josh,” Shadyside head coach Sean Grinch said. “He’s been wrestling real good so far this season. We need him to keep that up.”

Beaver Local, which didn’t bring its entire ‘A’ squad, won the 13-team event by a half-point, 226-225.5, over St. Joseph Christian Academy from State College, Pa. The Beavers accomplished the feat with only two champions and three runnersup, while SJCA had seven titlists.

Winning for Beaver Local were Damien Emmert (132) and Sam Lowe (195).

SJCA champions included Amonn Ohl (106), Ethan Kauffman (113), Zach Whitmer (120), Malachi Duvall (126), Caleb Downing (138), Evan Courts (145) and Keegan Rothrock (152). Downing, who defeated Bridgeport’s Mason Kuneff, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the second straight year.

Sandy Valley’s Joshua Newell (170) was the other winner.
