Multiple Crusaders led squad to memorable regular season

Steubenville Catholic Central saw four of its players named to the Division VI Eastern District All-Star first team list on Tuesday after a successful season that wrapped up with a playoff appearance.

First on the list for the Crusaders is junior quarterback Justin Hartzell, who finished the regular season with 1,367 pass yards and 17 touchdowns with 10 interceptions, while completing 84-of-174 passes. He added another 747 yards and eight touchdowns on 96 carries.

Junior running back Craig Smith also made the list after rushing for 1,048 yards and 15 touchdowns on 153 regular season carries.

Senior offensive lineman and University of Pennsylvania commit Vince Oliver added to his list of accolades with first-team honors.

On the defensive side, senior defensive lineman Levi Thompson earned first-team honors after recording 81 tackles, 35 solo, 23 tackles for loss, nine sacks and a fumble return for a touchdown during the regular season. He contributed 486 yards and 10 touchdowns on 44 carries as well as 274 yards and five touchdowns on 12 receptions on offense.

“Any one of our guys would tell you it’s great to receive individual honors, but it’s part of a team concept,” Central coach Steve Daley said. “They really bought into that. They rely on each other to elevate each other’s game, and they all work together to help us improve as a team.

“Any time you receive an honor like this, it’s really a reflection of your team itself and your teammates. I think everyone of our guys would echo those thoughts. I do want to congratulate each one of them. They are very deserving on the honors.”

Junior defensive lineman Jacob Stoll earned second-team honors. He recorded 57 tackles (27 solo and 30 assisted), eight for a loss, four sacks and a punt blocked.

Central also had four players earn special mention in Jordan Maul, Gino DiBiase, Kevin Cuervo and Matt Bell.
